The history of Doberman rescues began when responsible breeders saw a need to help when irresponsible breeders began to exploit the demand for Dobermans. As a rescue, IDR+ is not against an ethical, responsible breeder that strives to improve the health and temperament of the breed. A responsible breeder ALWAYS takes their dogs back, so they don’t add to the burden of rescues today. IDR+ understands that some families want the full Doberman puppy experience, but we don’t often have puppies available in rescue, and not everyone wants to adopt an adult. We would like to point families in the right direction to get a puppy responsibly and ethically (not necessarily quickly or cheaply).
Beware of backyard breeders (BYB’s) that typically do not test for health, ensure sound temperaments, or take a dog back down the road. BYB’s add to the burden of rescues, strain our resources, diminish our efforts. If you find a cheap puppy on a quick internet search, these are warning signs that you may be supporting a BYB. Even taking the puppy for free or at a discount (due to a perceived issue) is helping the BYB and NOT rescuing it. Please do your research and avoid unethical and irresponsible BYB’s who are contributing to declining health and temperaments of our beloved breed.
We follow the Doberman Pinscher Club of America’s Code of Ethics.

To locate a responsible breeder, we recommend consulting the Doberman Pinscher Club of America’s breeder directory. The DPCA breeder directory only contains responsible breeders who adhere to their strict code of ethics. The DPCA or its Officers do not recommend, guarantee, endorse, nor rate breeders, their kennels, or their stock. It also does not examine individual dogs. Buyers beware in all instances.
