Meet our sweet little boy, Maurice, a 4-year-old Chiweenie who’s been through more than any dog should ever have to endure. Maurice came to us from a local shelter, where he was originally adopted in 2023. Unfortunately, his life took a dark turn. After being rehomed to a place where love and care were absent, Maurice suffered unimaginable neglect. He was starved, left to wither, and even lost part of his ear—leaving him with a physical reminder of his painful past. His once-lush coat is now patchy and thin, the result of disregard and mistreatment.
Despite all he’s been through, Maurice is an incredibly sweet and loving boy. He’s gentle with other dogs, though he prefers those who won’t overwhelm him. He has a special place in his heart for dog-friendly cats and adores being around children. Maurice can be a little shy when meeting new people, but he’s easily won over with treats and quickly warms up once he feels safe. Speaking of treats, Maurice loves to sit up on his hind legs for them, his little body wiggling with excitement!
Maurice does have a particular need: he is very fearful of men. Because of his past, he would do best in a home with only women, or with men who are very patient and understanding of his fear. However, he is perfectly fine around kids, and they seem to help him feel more at ease.
Maurice would be perfectly happy with a couple of short leash walks each day, and he doesn’t require a fence, making him an ideal companion for someone who enjoys low-maintenance outdoor time. He’s also a perfect little buddy for car rides—he’ll happily sit on your lap, content to be close to you. When it’s time to relax, Maurice loves to snuggle and burrow under blankets, finding comfort in the warmth and safety of his loved ones.
Though his past has scarred him, Maurice’s spirit is resilient. He longs for a family who will show him the kindness and care he so desperately deserves. In the right home, with patience and love, Maurice will continue to heal and flourish into the loyal companion he was always meant to be.
Maurice’s story is one of pain, but also of hope. Will you be the one to offer him the second chance he deserves?
