Feature Dog

Feature Dog: Mandy
last modified on July 2, 2009
Mandy Shockingly enough, this little deformed girl was picked up as a stray. She is thought to be about 5 months old and our vet believes she was born with these deformities of her two front legs. Mandy's deformities present an unusual challenge for our vet, so he is doing his best to surgically repair her legs so she can have the chance to walk normally. We are not sure if it will work for her so keep her in your thoughts. She is a very sweet and loving little pup whom life has dealt a heavy burden.
Update 5/15/09: As you can see by the photos, Mandy has had her surgery and is doing well. The vet is still not sure the splints or surgery will help but we will continue the weekly bandage changes and hope for the best.
Update 5/23/09: Mandy is doing great but she was already growing too tall for her splint and she must have hit it wrong as she broke the bottom. So we went to the vet yesterday for our first bandage change and it was amazing to see her leg was already about 50% better.
Update 5/31/09: Another great update. The vet actually took off one of the splints and the leg looks great. It will be a bit longer for the other one since that deformity was far worse.
Update 6/12/09: Now both splints are off and things are looking good!!!! He wants to still keep her quiet for a few weeks and check them again. So she is ready to go for the most part. She can be viewed now. Mandy is a great girl but a busy girl. She is crate trained. She is good with the other dogs but because I have had to restrict her from actually playing with them she gets quite amped up around them wanting to play. She is a bit on the dominant side from the short interactions I have seen. With her leg the way she is, she would do best in a home with no other dogs, giving it more time to heal. If she dog won't play with her then she will leave it alone. She is quick to learn and loves to work.
7/01/09: Mandy is pretty much ready to go depending on your situation. She was just spayed and the vet did resplint her one leg that was bowing out a bit. If you live close enough to our vet and do not have any other dogs or can keep her separate from yours she would love to go to her new home. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Special Needs

Scooby Doo
last modified on June 8, 2009
Scooby Doo We can't figure out why this cute boy does not have a home yet? He is so sweet and loves to give kisses. Sure he isn't perfect looking but who is? He is 2 1/2 years old and absolutely adorable even with his different looking head. He has some neurological peculiarities such as walking in circles but gets along just fine. Scooby has seen our vet who believes there might have been accidental trauma that caused this, but he does not think it will worsen. He is housebroken and crate trained. He is a really good boy who listens well and has a very loving personality. He needs to go to a home without a lot of steps as he is a bit uncoordinated. Though good with other dogs he would be best as an only dog as when he gets excited he grabs at them. He has been waiting a long time for his special home. We are not lying when we say he will entertain you for hours with the things that he does. If you are interested in adopting our special guy, email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

DoberDuds: Scooby will love to see his new DoberDuds given by Lola Gonzalez. He's a Dude with 'Duds!

Danielle

Danielle Okay, she's ready for a new home!!!! Danielle was picked up as a stray in poor condition, but with IDR's TLC she is looking great. She is thought to be about 5 years old but she has definitely had a hard life. She was treated for heartworm and treatment is complete so she is ready for a home. She can't wait as she loves to cuddle and would love a person of her own. She is okay with certain other dogs, but would be best as an only dog. She cannot live with cats. When she arrived we noticed she had a very odd gait so we brought her to the vet only to find out she has an old broken pelvis that didn’t heal quite right. This poor girl! But she gets around just fine, in fact she runs, does steps and even counter surfs(we are working on that) with the best of them. She is very sweet and loves attention. She is a very easy girl, housebroken and does not need to be crated. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

DoberDuds: Diana Pudwill has sent DoberDuds for Danielle. She'll look real pretty wearing them!

Dober Gabby
last modified on June 20, 2009
Dober Gabby Gabby is a very sweet young girl who has had it tough in her short life. She is very shy and scared and will need a very patient home without young children. She's in a quiet foster home and doing well, but she still cowers from quick hand gestures. Once she warms up to you, however, she is a happy girl and she's yours for life. She is a true velcro dog and wants to follow you everywhere. She is undergoing heartworm treatment now and is almost ready for her new home. She loves to lie in the sun and could sunbathe for hours. She is good with dogs but can be a bit possessive of her stuff with other dogs, and she cat tested fine. She is also crate trained and does not appear to be a chewer, although she has been known to take the pillows off the sofa. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Red Dog
last modified on May 16, 2009
Red Dog Red Dog was turned into us with his brother, Diablo Dog (who has been adopted). He is 4 ½ years old. The owner was also the breeder but we don't know what genetic issue Red has that caused him to be born blind. Whatever the reason it doesn't matter but we now need to find this special guy a home. His owners surrendered both does due to having financial difficulties. He was used to having run of the house and being confined to the kitchen when they were gone. He is housebroken. He lived with older children and birds. He is fine with the other dogs in the foster home. He knows his basic commands, but it seems he they did not do many things with him such as leash walking. He is much better on a leash now and gets around his foster home with no issues. He does steps with ease. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Flyer
last modified on June 21, 2009
Flyer Flyer was brought in as a stray. It was soon discovered that he has possible Wobblers. He is unsteady on his feet and will stumble when he gets all excited and runs. We don’t know what the future holds for this boy but right now he is enjoying life to the fullest. If ever there was a happy boy, Flyer is it! He literally runs around the house smiling. He wants to be where all the action is whether it’s with the dogs or people. He insists on going out to play whenever any of his foster siblings go out. He LOVES tennis balls! He tends to be barky but that’s only because he is so excited to be with the family. He is very good in his crate but if you are home he wants to be with you. He enjoys running the fence to play with his Beagle neighbors. Flyer is very good in the house and likes to cuddle on the couch with his people. Does anyone out there want to open their heart to this very special boy? He is the very definition of a goof and you can’t help but smile when he looks at you. He is very good with dogs but cannot live with cats. For more information please contact Sandy at siouxland@comcast.net

Alexis
last modified on June 13, 2009
Alexis IDR received the following message from a shelter:
We have a 9 yr old Female Dobe that is in need of rescue. She is an old sweet thing.
Here is where our vet said she was medically:
dog in overall poor condition, underweight, muscle wasting in rear, bilateral cataracts, mild to moderate tartar, eyelid tumor upper lid OD, alopecic ears, no obvious otitis, heart auscultated normally, coughing and purulent nasal discharge noted, suspect kennel cough, pain elicited on palpation of cranial abdomen, multiple mammary tumors noted caudal mammary chain, hair loss noted over tail and inner rear legs, consistent with FAD. Old dog in poor condition.
Sounds crazy, but these are the ones IDR loves to help. They deserve a chance at having a wonderful life no matter their condition or age. Here at IDR, we immediately thought: We can rebuild her . . . we have the technology. Alexis will be better than she was before; better, stronger, faster! Unfortunately, with all the medical treatment she requires in order to be restored to health, our lovely Alexis really has become the Six Million Dollar Senior. If anyone is able to help with our very special agent's extensive medical bills, please go to www.ildoberescue.com to donate. (We are a 501(c)3, so all donations are tax deductible.)
The lovely Alexis is a little imp of a Dobergirl who is 9 years young. She's only about 20" at the shoulder & 50 lbs. Like most of the seniors we encounter at IDR, she's pretty much already the perfect pet. She is well behaved, quiet, housebroken & crate trained. She does not even attempt to get up on any furniture & is content to rest on the many cushy dog beds. She crates well, content to take a snooze or snack on a stuffed Kong or bone. However, she is now loose all of the time in her foster home, no accidents, no destruction, so she wouldn't really need to be crated at all. She is fostered in a home with 4 other dogs & does fine w/them. She is just now learning about toys. Her Vizsla puppy housemate has made teaching her how to play his mission. I've caught the usually dignified gal playing w/the pup several times. However, what she really loves is people, so she'd also be perfectly content in a home without other dogs.
Update 5/17/09: Alexis is now fully recovered from kennel cough, whipworms & her multiple surgeries (mastectomy, spay & removal of the cyst on her eyelid). We did a blood panel and chest x-ray to make sure she was healthy for such a big surgery and everything looked great. She is now at nearly 50#, a perfect weight for her. She is currently recovering from her second treatment for heartworm. Only one more to go next month & then she will have a clean bill of health & be ready for her new home & new life. (She was so badly infested, that we have had to split her treatment into 4 doses.)
If you would like more info on this wonderful girl, contact amyndobes@sbcglobal.net

Bruiser
last modified on April 29, 2009
Bruiser Bruiser is a 6-year-old boy that was turned into a shelter for no reason listed. He's been in a foster home for about 3 weeks now and he has shown what a sweet and smushy boy he truly is. There is nothing that Bruiser enjoys more than taking a quick frolic after coming inside from potty duty and finding a sunny spot near his people to lie in. If you are close enough to scratch his chin, even better! He is housebroken, walks decently on a leash and knows some basic commands. He was fine for having his nails clipped. He also appears to be okay with cats. Bruiser has gotten along quite well with other dogs in his foster home although he can be a bit grumbly to the younger, more active ones when they get close to him while he is lying down. For this reason, I feel he would be better placed in a home with no children under 10 years. Bruiser also must be crated when you will leave the home as he can get anxious and destructive. He has come to accept the crate quite well, however, so crating is a simple solution and helps calm him. Bruiser had many lick sores on him when he came into foster care, no doubt from the stressful time at the shelter, but they are mostly healed now. Unfortunately, we just found out that he has heartworm and will need to undergo that painful and expensive treatment. So, Bruiser will not be available until he has finished his treatment. Please check back to see how Bruiser is doing, and if you are interested in this loving boy, contact Laura at knollbg@msn.com

Franklin
last modified on June 21, 2009
Franklin Franklin was dumped at the pound because his family didn't realize that having an intact male and female dog would produce puppies. So instead of blaming themselves for such stupidity, after the puppies were born, they got rid of him. He is no more than a puppy himself, somewhere around a year old, weighing less than 50 pounds, but will always be on the small side. And, although we think he is mostly Dobe, he is probably a mix and we are thinking maybe with Vizsla. His coat is very dull and bleached so he most likely lived his entire life outside. As a result of his previous owners neglect, he is also has heartworm. He is undergoing treatment now. He also has some unusual movements and behaviors. Our vet is thinking he has some kind of neurological issue but we have not completely figured it out. For more information email Sandy at siouxland@comcast.net

Elmo
last modified on June 28, 2009
Elmo Elmo was picked up as a stray with the tape still on his ears. Nobody claimed him but we can guess why. This guy has some serious gait issues which we believe to be Wobblers. He is only about 7 months old so it is unusual to see so young. We will be seeing the vet shortly for ideas of how to help this little guy.
Update: Elmo has been to our vet and an x-ray of his neck was done. It shows two large gaps, two vertebrae pressing on each other and some malformed vertebrae. We do not think it is going to be possible to do surgery but we are looking into it for him. Our vet does not think he is in pain and he is running around happy as can be.
Update 5/2/09: We sent his x-rays off to a specialist and he said he would not do surgery as it really would only have a 20% chance of working. So he is who he is! We have him on Vetri-Disc and other supplements to try to help. He is a wonderful, happy puppy so we cannot see any reason not to put him up for adoption so he can live out his life with a family of his own. We understand it will be emotionally difficult as we do not know how long he will have before his Wobblers worsens. He is great with other dogs, but very much a puppy and pesty. The vet did recommend placing him as an only dog as chances of him getting hurt will lessen, but we think as long as he is happy that is all that matters. He is crate trained. He cannot do many steps so he must go to a home that is ranch style. He also will not be placed in a home with young children. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

DoberDuds: Rick Salinas sends DoberDuds for Elmo along with this message from Dexter: "Adopted Dobe Dexter says his 'Duds helped him find his home, so he sends the 'Duds to Elmo."

Sasha

Sasha Unfortunately this adorable girl lost her sight due to Blastomycosis. What is so sad about this case is that the owner called us about a month ago and asked if we could take in her partially blind Doberman. She did not tell us why she was partially blind. I asked her if she contacted any closer rescues since she lived in TN and never heard from her again. An IDR volunteer happened to be going through TN and said she had room in her car if we wanted to take in a dog from that area and I remembered this girl. So the other day she came into our program. I did some searching and finally found the vet they used for Sasha who shared with me that back in February they diagnosed her with Blasto and only purchased a few weeks of medication. The vet said the owners never returned for more medication. With Blasto they must be on an antifungal medication for many months in order for it not to spread. Since they did not continue the meds, the fungus spread and now she is totally blind and has lesions on her body. We immediately started her on the meds when she arrived and we will have to wait and see how things go for this sweet girl. She does not act sick at all and is eating just fine so we are hoping for a happy ending to this story. We will keep you posted.
Update 5/15/09: Sasha is doing great. She is ready to be adopted now. She must stay on the medication for many more months and IDR will happily pay for the medication. She is such a wonderful and happy girl. She is good with other dogs. She gets around just fine even though she is blind. Sasha is housebroken and is not crated at my house. If interested in fostering or adopting this special girl email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Spunky
last modified on June 30, 2009
Spunky This senior girl is sweet as can be and is supposed to be 9 years old, but you couldn't tell it by how spunky she is! Spunky is very confused and has no idea why her life got turned upside down. She, her 9-year-old Pitty sister and her Minpin brother who was reported to be 19 yrs old were all dumped at the pound. It is sad that none of the extended family could help. BUT that is where this sad story turns into a happy story ! IDR+ offered to take Spunky in and find her a new family. She still appears to be searching for ‘home’ as all she is doing is trying to get out the front door or gated back yard if that door is open, so a fenced yard would be best for this little pistol. Hopefully she will find a home where she will want to stay and stop looking for a way out to get back to her previous home. We just found out she is heartworm positive and will be undergoing treatment soon. Her foster auntie states she is so willing to please but due to her hyper and pushy personality, it would be best for her to attend obedience classes. Also she would be best with children over six years old. She is good with cats and with other dogs.
Update 6/26/09: Ms Spunky had her heartworm treatment, June 9th and 10th. Unlike most dogs it didn't really seem to phase her. If at all, it made her feel better! But now that she has been with her foster aunt for the past month she actually is setteling down some. She has to do her laps of my patio (12ft by 8ft patio) and after a few minutes, she actually lays down in the sun to enjoy the warmth. Spunky would like to send out some kisses to Frances Proc who donated Dober duds to our girl, she is styling in her collar and leash when we are out on our walks, thank you Ms. Proc. Jessica Jessica was an owner surrender to the shelter. She is said to be 8 years old and she is quite a beauty. She is a sweet girl that was wonderful for her bath and nails. Seems to get along well with the other dogs. She is crate trained and appears to be housebroken. She is a very alert girl and lets you know when someone or something is approaching the house. Her gait is a bit off so we took her to our vet and he suspects Wobblers. She still gets around fine but a ranch style home would be best for her. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Ellie Ellie is a very sweet senior gal who just does not look or act her age. We were told she was 12 by animal control but I hope my Dobes look this good at 12!. She has corneal dystrophy in one eye but it really does not affect her. She is fine with the other dogs in the home, both large and small. She is housebroken and doe not need to be crated, though she really likes to go and lie in the crate. Overall she is a very easy foster girl. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Lady Lady and Greta were dropped at the shelter because their owner lost her home. Lady is about 10 years old but don't let that fool you, she is very lively and energetic. Lady will play & run around in the back yard like a young doberteen! She absolutely loves everyone and her nub tail wiggles all the time (even when she is drinking water or eating that tail is moving!). Lady has the most soulful looking brown eyes, and very soft red fur. She is good with dogs, both large and small in her foster home, along with the cats, which she will sometimes chase to play with. Lady is housebroken, but does have accidents once in a while (am working on this) and can be crated for a normal workday.. (i do have a petsitter who comes in to let everyone out) I leave the crate door open in the evening and Lady loves to go in it to chew on a bone, play with a toy or just get comfortable on her blanket and relax. She knows some basic commands, I would recommend additional training as she appears to have had none in her past life and could use some to relieve her energy. Lady rides very nice and quiet in the car, looking out the windows. If you will consider opening your home to a senior sweetie email her foster mom, Nancy at gottahavedobes@yahoo.com

Greta is a bit more reserved then Lady but very sweet. She gets along great with the foster dogs in the home. She is said to be fine with cats too. She does have a lick sore that she bothers so that will often need to be covered up so she does not make it worse. She is said to be about 10 years old. Charlie Poor Charlie! She was adopted 7 years ago from us and was returned along with Maximus because they could not deal with them anymore. Charlie was having accidents in the house. Now that she gets a little bit of Tylan powder in her food she has stopped having accidents. My suggestion would be crate her when you are not home. They said they did not have room in the house for a crate. Now at 9½ years old she has to find another home. She is a petite little girl at about 50 pounds. She is very timid in her foster home but is starting to come out of her shell. She loves to go outside with her foster siblings but this girl would be happiest in a quieter home. She is good with kids and other dogs and cats. If you are ready to give this senior girl a forever home email Sandy at siouxland@comcast.net

Ebony Ebony was given up by her owner when his wife passed away and he must move into a retirement community. Here is what he wrote to us and IDR feels for both Ebony and her owner and will do all we can to help find her a new loving home.
"I write on behalf of Ebony my 7 year-old female black and brown purebred Doberman with floppy ears. She is a wonderful companion who is very friendly. She likes people and other dogs. She has been a member of our family since she was a puppy. I need to find a loving home for her because the retirement community into which I plan to move does not allow pets. My beloved wife of 50+ years died this past year. Since her death, I have come to realize that I am not capable of taking care of a large house, a dog and myself. Reluctantly I have come to the conclusion that I must change my lifestyle to acknowledge the limitations imposed on me by advancing age. But I cannot move until I find a suitable new home for my ever faithful companion Ebony. Can you help me find Ebony a new home?"
Right now Ebony is located in Iowa City with her owner. She is a very gregarious dog. She enjoys playing with other dogs. She has been around neighbor children and grandchildren. She has not lived with children or cats or other dogs. She loves to go for walks. She likes to ride in the car. Ebony has had excellent care from our vets and her shots are up to date, her teeth were cleaned a month ago, she receives a heartworm pill every month, she was spayed early in life. Her only health problem has been allergies. They are controlled with antihistamines and a strict vegetarian diet. A tendency to be incontinent is controlled with PPA. Ebony is a wonderful girl. If interested email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

He is a very sweet boy that seems good with everyone. He has met the other dogs and been fine with them. He is a bit of a bull in a china shop so would probably be too much for young children. He appears to be housebroken and he is not crated at my house. He is a bit of a whiner, letting you know when he is not happy. Sturgis

Sturgis We cannot figure out why we still have this sweet guy.
Minus the motorcycle, Sturgis has ridden into the IDR Plus world once again, no fault of his own though. Sturgis’ family has lost their home and poor Sturgis could not go along for the ride. Sturgis is now three years old. He has actually completed two obedience classes and earned his Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. If you are ready for a fun loving, playful, energetic dog, then Sturgis is your boy. He strives very hard to please his foster mom and is oh so smart. He loves to chase after balls or just about anything you can throw for him, be careful though, he also likes to tear them apart if no one is watching. Sturgis needs activity and exercise in his daily routine, he walks nicely on the leash. He is definitely not a couch potato fellow. He can be on the “vocal side”, everything is exciting to him. Sturgis does need to be crated when left alone, he will chew on cloth items. Sturgis has lived successfully with older children and a female dobe. He cannot be placed in a home with cats. It is recommended that Sturgis has a fenced in yard to romp and play in. Sturgis has adjusted to his foster home and all the changes he has faced but he would feel much better with a loving, motivated new family to call his very own. Please contact Terri at t.hornitschek@yahoo.com.

Sinbad
last modified on April 13, 2009
Sinbad Thanks to a good Samaritan who was willing to stop and help, this boy did not become one of the many thousands of pets each year killed by vehicles. The following is the description she sent us about him:

"On the way into town today I saw a dog running after a truck going down my road - and then running after another truck going down the connecting road. HE was not chasing the vehicles to "chase" - he was running and trying to LOOK up into the trucks. My heart sank. Perhaps I am wrong but I have to think he was dumped and left by someone. He is a pure bred Doberman male - very pretty - no tags - panic struck - thin but not emaciated - wild but no aggression. He would not come to me and was very frightened but he did hop up into my van when I opened the doors. I was thankful for that. It was 15 degree wind chill today ....... "

Thought to be about 18 months old, he is now a happy boy but a typical Doberteen, needing obedience training and a patient owner. He is also very athletic and would be great at agility. He is not good with cats. He is housebroken, very eager to please and needs an active family with a fenced yard so he can get sufficient exercise safely. An obedience deposit will be required. For additional information contact his foster Mom at Rdobe1@aol.com AFTER completing an adoption application.

DoberDuds: Maybe Sinbad was looking for his DoberDuds in those trucks he was running with. So, Farah Vocaty has sent them to him instead. "Thanks, Farah."

Doug This boy is just raring to go! He had to stay quiet for more than 2 months because of his heartworm treatment, but is ready for a new home. He is so happy to get to run and play now since he is only a year old. He's a little bit klutzie but he would love to be your partner at obedience and/or Rally class. He is very sweet and loves to give kisses. He seems to be good with the other female dogs in the home. He will slowly be mingled with the males. He knows some basic commands, is housebroken and crate trained. If you can make room for a big goofy boy contact Sandy for more information at siouxland@comcast.net

DoberDuds: The William Dosek family sends DoberDuds to Doug for the safe return of their Nina who got loose. Nina sends this message: "Thank you Teresa, Nina, Jolene, and everyone else who made sure I made it home safely from my adventure ... Nina Dosek."

Maximus

Maximus This very handsome 6 year old came back to IDR, along with Charlie, about a month ago after being adopted about a year ago. The reason given was that he eliminated in the house – but, he did this with an uncrated, 9 hour plus absence. Despite IDR’s advice to crate, the owners were unwilling/unable to take this easy step to try and solve this problem. Well, Max has easily adapted to going into a crate and staying for as long as you need him too – which has solved the problem completely. He is a very loving guy, who will likely become very attached to the house alpha(s) in typical Dobe velcro-dog style – but not obnoxiously. He is around older kids and adults and has been very affectionate to all people. He does get “amped up” under certain circumstances that his forever home owner will need to manage. He is super in a car. On a leash and prong collar, he is absolutely great, but when another dog approaches, the walker needs to have him on heel…but this is not hard at all to do so. Max will also need to be walked by himself – other dog housemates with him make him too anxious when another dog approaches. He is very fun-loving and LOVES to run and play - he would do well with someone who likes to jog or take frequent walks. He has very much enjoyed the company and has gotten along with four dogs in his foster home, including a male and female Dobe, and two whippets. He eats, sleeps and relaxes well, especially after exercise. He will make a great addition to a home that can meet his needs! Please contact Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

DoberDuds: Merrill Berry has sent Maximus his DoberDuds. We all hope he goes to a forever house big enough to provide love, food, and space for a proper crate.

Jackson Jackson is an adorable and affectionate young male. He was given up to the shelter because he cannot live with cats or chickens. He is only about a year old and full of puppy energy. He is quite a happy boy and could use a bit of training. He has been mingled with the dogs and has been playing ever since. In the limited time he has been fostered in a home setting he seems to have good overall manners. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

DoberDuds: Mary Ann Jackson sends DoberDuds to IDR+ Dobe 'Jackson' with this message: "Belay & Eureka Jackson say that 'Jackson' can not be without DoberDuds."

Richie

Richie As with most of the dogs that come to IDR, once we get them into a foster home (we are always in need of loving foster homes), the more we learn about them. We learn more about this loving boy every day. Richie is a 1 1/2 year old male doberman with soft floppy ears. He came to us by way of a shelter so not much is known about his previous life. What we do know is that he does not have a lot of faith in the kindness of humans but he is learning that he likes our attention. He is shy with people but absolutely lights up with another dog to play with. In fact, he would do best with another dog for company. He is housbroken, is OK with our dog-friendly cat who knows not to run, and is willing to learn. Being a relatively young man who can find trouble if left to his own devices, Richie is at least easily redirected with only your voice. For these reasons, we strongly recommend obedience training in a class setting to help him gain confidence with humans, bond with his new family, and learn better manners. We also recommend a crate or other secure area in the home until he learns some of the rules of the house. Richie is a diamond in the rough who with a little molding and patient training will be the most dedicated companion you could ever wish for - a great addition to your pack. DoberDuds: Karen Caruso has sent DoberDuds for Richie. This shy boy says, "Thanks, Karen."

Gus

Gus Gus had to be given up when his 83 year old owner just could not handle him anymore due to his size and exuberance. Gus is 4 years old, and currently getting the exercise he needs to help him slim down. He tends to pull when on leash, but like a true Doberman he is learning fast. Gus is an absolute sweetheart to his people and becoming less demanding. He is settling nicely into his foster home. He gets along great with his 2 foster sisters & brother but has yet to learn how to play with them. When outside he will just run and run in big circles. He tends to get a bit mouthy when excited, with other dogs and children. He might be best with older children. While I’m not sure about indoor cats but he does ignore the barn cats. He’s met the horses over the gate, nose to nose and was mildly interested, when they turned and ran he just stood and looked. He does tend to be a bit dramatic when kept separate from the rest of the dogs, but crates wonderfully and will settle down after a few minutes. The best thing about Gus though is his smile when you come in! If you are interested in this big boy please contact his foster mom at rose6horse@yahoo.com

DoberDuds: Linda Parker sends DoberDuds for Gus so he can wear them while he is working out, losing weight, and getting some exercise. She also sends this message: "Wishing Gus a super home - enjoy the DoberDuds!"

Duke Duke was picked up as a stray. He only just arrived but is doing great. He has a few bad behaviors such as jumping but his foster dad is working with him. He is crate trained and housebroken. He is getting along well with his foster Doberman brother and loves to play. Duke is completely a wiggly thing, his tail goes constantly. He loves nylabones, and loves to chase and return tennis balls. He is your typical huge leaner. We will add more information as we get to know him better. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Remington
last modified on July 2, 2009
Remington Remington came in as a stray but then the previous owner sent an email to the shelter telling all about him. They said he is a really good dog and knows sit, shake and down. He likes kids but he did not list the ages. He is in a foster home now and he is housebroken and crate trained. He is great with other dogs. His owners were military and just could not keep him. He was turned in on his first birthday (June 3). Not the best birthday present to lose your home so hopefully next year’s birthday will be better. He is very energetic and needs training. He is a blue but he appears to be Melanistic. Breeds who are missing their signature traits, like in the doberman, would be called melanistic Dobermans. Melanism is an increased amount of black or nearly black pigmentation (as of skin, feathers, or hair) of an organism, resulting from the presence of melanin. He is adorable and a petite guy. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

DoberDuds: Thanks to Frances Proc another Dobe orphan, Remington, has his DoberDuds.

Victor Victor was turned into animal control because his family "did not have any time for him." They apparently didn't even have the time to teach him basic commands and manners. This 8-month-old Doberboy is a typical goofy boy. He has a lot to learn, but he is more than willing to learn if you have a cookie. His ear crop and legs are a little short, but he makes up for his height in personality. He is funny and playful and loves to play with toys. He rides well in the car, but he needs some improvement on the leash. He is a little barky around other dogs at first, but he calms down after the novelty wears off. Cats are unknown with him, but when tested he look at them got excited but moved onto something else more exciting. Obedience classes are a MUST with this guy. You will both enjoy the experience, and you will love to see his improvement. He is being fostered in a kennel at the moment, so we won't have a chance to start obedience until he is in a home setting. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Leo
last modified on July 2, 2009
Leo Leo is a 5 1/2 year old extremely handsome boy. Leo's owner adopted him when he was approximately a year old. Sadly, she is forced to move into a senior living facility that does not accept pets. He is currently staying with a friend of the owner. He is an extremely loving, sweet, affectionate sweetheart who has never shown any signs of aggression. He has been around many people and children and his disposition has always remained docile. Leo loves the snow, playing in rain puddles, and volleyballs. He loves to be outside but has never been off leash. He should be in a fenced in yard or on a long chain when he outside or always on a leash when he goes for walks. He is great with all people, children and other dogs. I am not sure how he would be around cats. He does like to surprise people at times with a quick jump up on them. It is like a game to him, so people with small children should be aware of this. Leo is also crate trained and truly loves his crate at night. He has never been allowed on furniture and the owner strongly recommends that the new owner adheres to this as there is a high probability that he would chew a pillow or piece of furniture given the chance. Leo also loves to hook his two front paws over his ears when he sleeps which is absolutely precious to see. He has a sensitive stomach in that he will get diarrhea for days if you give him even a tiny piece of people food. If you stick to his diet you won't have to worry about this. Leo had dry skin so the owner finally found the right food - Fromm chicken a la veg dry formula - which has given his coat a lustrous shine. He gets diarrhea also from treats, rawhide bones, pig ears so it is just best to stick to his diet. Leo would be best in a home with older kids and a securely fenced back yard. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

DoberDuds: Leo is quite a handsome boy and can't wait to show off his DoberDuds from Frances Proc.

Pepper Pepper was an owner surrender to the shelter because he was too much dog for their small house and yard. He is not in a foster home yet so we cannot add anymore information than that. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Iowa Gunner
last modified on June 26, 2009
Iowa Gunner Gunner was rescued by a woman who just wanted to get him out of his neglectful situation. She was told he was kept in a crate almost all the time. He is said to be about 2 years old and needs a bit of training. He loves to run and gets a bit amped up with things such a lawnmowers and trucks. In the short period of time the rescuer had him, she taught him how to play ball and Frisbee which he really enjoyed. She said he is easy to work with. He seemed okay with the other dog and even the cats in the home but did not fully mingle. He only just arrived in our program so we will add more information once we get to knoe him better in one of our foster home. We did take him to the vet to get him updated and the vet said he has a Grade III heart murmur. Don't let that deter you from adopting this wonderful boy. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Zeus

Zeus Zeus is happy to be back with IDR. He was adopted and returned for acting like a dog. The final straw was when he chased a possum, imagine that!! Zeus is just a doll. He loves to give kisses and wiggles all the time. Zeus is 6 years old and full of energy. He just finished up his heartworm treatment so he is so happy he can finally play. He LOVES to play with the garden hose. He will chase the water until you turn it off. He does get along with other dogs, but can play a bit rough. He does not get along with cats. Zeus is a real velcro dog and will follow you everywhere you go. He does not get on any furniture. He will stay in his crate quietly as long as he can see you, but he will bark and cry if you leave the house so this guy is not a good apt dog. He will do best in a home with someone around most of the time. He absolutely loves people and is ready to please. He knows his basic commands of sit, stay, down, but will need obedience class to further his skills. He does sleep all night in his crate. He loves to go for walks and is still learning the basics of leash walking. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Diesel Just imagine what a conversation piece this guy will be!!! Don't worry,Diesel is totally healthy but has Vitiligo.
In animals with vitiligo, antibodies are formed against pigment-containing cells that are responsible for color. The antibodies destroy these cells, resulting in loss of color. While the dog’s health is not adversely affected by this disease, nutritional supplements may help to restore the dog’s pigment. Diesel is a wonderful boy that has been up for adoption with a different rescue for quite some time with no interest so they asked us to take him in and find him a new home. He is great with dogs but he is not good with cats. He only just arrived so we will add more information once we get to know him better. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Porsche
last modified on March 28, 2009
Porsche This poor girl came into our program almost a year ago. As you can see by her different colored scarves she has been to many adoptathons and just been passed up each time. She came in with a severely broken leg and was absolutely wonderful through the whole healing process. Porsche is thought to be about 5 years old and just as sweet as they come. She will give back 110% if only someone will love her. She really does need to be an only pet though as she gets too possessive of her things with other animals (never with people). She would be fine with children and is a sturdy girl with the little ones. The only issue I see with her and kids is that she absolutely loves food and every time you leave food anywhere she will find it. She gets nervous in public and just clings to her person but is getting so much better about everything. She is best crated when you are not home but could be different in your home. That is something you can try but must be willing to crate if it does not go well. Please consider fostering or giving Porsche a permanent home. She has been in the kennel a few months as we just do not have enough foster homes. Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Ruby Red
last modified on June 8, 2009
Ruby Red Ruby was confiscated with many other dogs from a hoarding situation. She is thought to be about 4 years old and a very sweet girl. She loves everyone she meets and will snuggle all day. She LOVES food and does a happy dance at meal time. Ruby is a low energy Doberman and coming from a hoarder, she is so excited to have her own soft dog bed to relax on. She spends most of the day there watching everything that goes on between naps. Ruby was recently diagnosed with degenerative spinal disease. There is no cure but she is starting chiropratic treatment to see if this will slow her progression. Most days you would never know when she plays with toys or runs around the backyard, but occasionally she has some pain and just likes to lay around. Her only downfall is that due to the spinal issues, she cannot hold her urine for long periods of time. She would do best with someone gone 6 hours or less so there are no accidents. She should also go to someone without many stairs to maneuver. If you would like to give this girl a real loving home and her chance to "just be a dog", please contact Joanne at dobeagility77@sbcglobal.net or 309-732-1468 (e-mail responds quicker).

DoberDuds: Ernestine Giesecke has donated DoberDuds for this shy girl. She sends this message, "DoberDuds and best wishes to IDR+ Ruby Red for a great and long life at a new, forever home. From: Ruby Red who has left her home for the Rainbow Bridge."

Sliver
last modified on May 31, 2009
Sliver Sliver is a 3 year old all natural gal (so has floppy ears and a long tail) who came to IDR from an outdoor living situation where she had also had 2 litters of puppies. She was quite shy initially but quickly caught onto and learned to LOVE indoor living!! My neighbor just commented today that she is quite the happy gal now. She is an easy-going lady who is still a bit shy with new folks so the big thing is that her new family will have to be patient with her and give her time to adjust. If you do so though, you are likely to end up with an awesome new family member. Sliver currently goes to work with her foster mom in the mornings and looks forward to a ½ hour or longer walk in the afternoons. Although she still pulls a bit – she really is a joy to go for a walk with. Sliver would ideally love to have a dog buddy to play with – she loves her foster brother dobie but he just can’t play as hard as she would like to since he is a senior with suspected Wobblers. She absolutely adores her fenced yard and if I had the capability to do so, I would videotape her as it really is a thing of beauty to see her leap – or almost dive through ferns in the yard as she clears the neighbor’s bird feeder of squirrels and birds. She is just such a sleek, athletic gal. She would likely enjoy agility but her conformation (she is a bit pigeon-toed) is not the greatest so not sure she could really compete at a high level, unfortunately. Sliver gets along just fine with a female Aussie mix too and also tolerates two cats in her foster home. She still chases them on occasion – as she likes to play – but overall, does well with them. Sliver will not be adopted to a home with small children since she has never been socialized with children. An obedience deposit will be required at the time of adoption. Thanks for considering adding Sliver to your family. Email Tamara at tsfmcky@yahoo.com

Lady Tiffany
last modified on April 24, 2009
Lady Tiffany Lady Tiffany had to given up because her owner was having financial issues. She was 5 years old in March and as you can see she is quite a beauty. This girl is very skittish in new situations and with loud noises or sudden movements. She will not be placed with young kids, but did live with an older girl and did wonderfully. She will jump a 4 foot fence with ease if she is scared. She will need a home that is comfortable with the reactions of a fearful dog and even better would be a home that would go to obedience classes to boost her confidence. She is especially fearful of men and will not be placed in a home where the man is the sole caretaker. It takes her quite awhile to adjust to her new home but once settled in she is a great companion. She is completely housebroken and crate trained and should be crated when you are not home. She gets along with other dogs, but would prefer laid back ones. She also gets along with horses. She did not seem to be good with cats when tested. She will play ball and Frisbee. She loves to howl with the sirens. If interested email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net

Lemon Lemon was turned into the shelter because she snapped at their young child. She is a very petite little girl and only a year old. She is very energetic and fun and would love an owner with a similar personality. She does not like to be crated and so far loose in the house seems to be non destructive when left alone. She jumps gates with ease, but to follow you. She has not tried to jump over her yard fence. She is good with the other dogs but definitely dominant and wants to be in charge. She will be placed with another male dog only or as an only dog. Lemon must go to a home with a fenced yard as she needs a way to let out some of her energy. She will not be placed with children under 8 years old due to her past. Lemon would love to do obedience or have a job to do. She is one smart Lemon tart! Email Pam at orphandobe@ameritech.net
